Hand Carved Jade
Jade carvings are valuable possessions among the Chinese. Aptly described, a hand carved jade is to the Chinese what gold is to the larger western world. According to Chinese Folklore, jade carvings were historically accepted as the bridge between the present state of man, and his intended purpose in life. Such carvings were thought to bridge life and immortality, as well as connect earth to heaven. The strong beliefs of the Chinese explain the different colors and shapes used on hand carved jade today. The most common colors included black, white, yellow, red, blue, lavender and green. Although these were ritual colors to the Chinese, they are still prevalent today, but the brilliant green color is the most prevalent. The basic shape of the jade is a perforated disk, which was initially used as a communication vessel to the gods by the Chinese. The modern use of hand carved jade dates back to the 1750s when jadeite was first used in Burma and later imported to China. Some of the value of the brilliant green colored stone lays in its hard and durable nature. Further, hand carvers are able to give the finished carving a bright lustrous finish due to its micro crystalline composition. Carvers who have perfected the art of carving this hard stone, are however able to come up with some fine and intricate carvings, much to the delight of jade lovers all over the world. Once a hand carved jade is purchased, it can be passed down many generations in a family. For this reason, most people consider jade a historical carving rather than just an ordinary gemstone. In the investment markets, hand carved jade is known to survive fluctuating markets and even depression with its ever increasing value. The value of the carvings vary with color, with green being the most expensive. Luckily for the consumer market, there are more than 100 shades of green jade. The most common however are apple green, imperial green, leaf green and celadon green. The prices of red and lavender jade are also on the rise as the two gain popularity. The prices of hand carved jade will in the near future continue to rise because the supply of jadeite- the main rock used in jade carvings-is no longer in high supply as it used to be. The growing interest in jade carvings will also drive the demand for the same higher and consequently, the prices will continue to rise.
